The town is the administrative centre of the Borough of Dartford, which also includes the towns of Crayford, Swanscombe and Gravesend to the north. In medieval times, it was an important market town, and one of the busiest crossing points of the River Thames.

Dartford is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was owned by the king. It was then a small town, with a population of around 200. By the 13th century, it had grown to become an important market town, and one of the busiest crossing points of the River Thames. The town was raided by the French in 1340, during the Hundred Years War.

In 1520, Henry VIII built a royal Manor House in the town, which was later enlarged by Elizabeth I. The Manor House was used by the royal family until the 16th century, when it was converted into a prison.

The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, with the opening of factories and mills. The population of the town increased from around 2,000 in 1800 to over 20,000 by 1850.
