History of Crawfordsville
Crawfordsville, Indiana, is located in Montgomery County in west central Indiana. The population is around 15,000 people. The Wabash River runs through the town, which is approximately one hour northwest of Indianapolis.
The first settlers in the Crawfordsville area were from Kentucky, who arrived in 1823. The town was originally known as Widow’s Creek, but was later renamed for Colonel William H. Crawford, who laid out the town in 1829. Colonel Crawford also donated land for the establishment of Wabash College, which opened its doors in 1832.
Crawfordsville became an important stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal in the 1830s, which contributed to the town’s growth. Industry began to develop in the town, including the manufacture of wagons and carriages. In 1853, the first railroad line was built through Crawfordsville, further boosting the town’s economy.
