History of Chester (Illinois)
The village of Chester was founded in 1836 by English entrepreneur and social reformer Bartholomew Staniforth. Staniforth had been an early proponent of the abolition of slavery and sought to create a model community for freed slaves in Illinois. The village was named for Chester, England, where Staniforth was from.
Staniforth’s idealistic experiment in social reform did not last long. The village was beset by financial problems from the start, and many of its residents soon left in search of better opportunities elsewhere. The village struggled on for several years, but by 1841 it was all but abandoned.
A new wave of settlers began arriving in Chester in the 1850s, attracted by the promise of cheap land. These settlers were mostly from the southern United States, and they brought with them a distinctly different culture from that of the village’s founders. The newcomers were largely uninterested in social reform, and the village soon took on a more typical American character.
Chester grew steadily in the second half of the 19th century, thanks in part to the expansion of the railroad. The village was incorporated as a city in 1864.
