History of Kelso
Kelso is a small city located in the southcentral region of Washington state in the United States. It is the county seat of Cowlitz County and has a population of just over 4,000 people. The city was founded in 1847 and was named after Captain William Kelso, who was the commander of Fort Vancouver at the time. It was originally incorporated as a town in 1869 and then later upgraded to a city in 1888.
Kelso’s early history is closely linked to the nearby Cascade Mountains and the many rivers and streams in the area. The Cascade Mountain range provided a natural barrier between the west coast of the United States and the rest of the country, and the rivers served as a transportation route for the early settlers. The first permanent European settlement in the area was Fort Vancouver, which was established by the British Hudson’s Bay Company in 1824.
Captain Kelso arrived at Fort Vancouver in 1829 and served as its commander for the next 15 years. In 1847, he decided to establish a new settlement about 10 miles (16 km) downstream from the fort, on the banks of the Cowlitz River. The new settlement was originally called Kelso Landing, but it was later shortened to Kelso.
The city of Kelso was built on a grid pattern, with wide streets and lots of green space. This was in contrast to other nearby settlements, which were often built around a central plaza. The city’s grid pattern is still evident today.
