Calhoun was founded in 1853 as the seat of Gordon County. The county was named for General Gordon, a hero of the MexicanAmerican War and the American Civil War.
Calhoun was a small town until the late 19th century, when it began to grow rapidly as a center of the textile industry. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the city in 1872.
