History of Bartlesville
Bartlesville is a city in Washington County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 35,750 at the 2010 census, with a 2019 estimated population of 42,464. It is the county seat of Washington County. Bartlesville is located in the Tulsa metropolitan area.
John Bartles, a member of a party led by Colonel Frederick Witcher that explored the area in October 1849, moved his family to the site and Energy Corporation in Bartlesville. Bartlesville is home to Phillips Petroleum Company, the first commercially successful oil company established in Oklahoma. Frank Phillips founded Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville in 1905 when the area was still Indian Territory.
Phillips had been working in Oklahoma since 1903 in the Seminole Oil Company, and his success there led him to organize his own company. The new firm took over a small refinery near Bartlesville that had been set up a few years earlier and soon began to bring in new technology and equipment. By 1909, Phillips had built a modern refinery and laid a network of pipe lines throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.
The company town that grew up around the refinery was named Bartlesville after its founder. The first post office in Bartlesville opened in 1910. Bartlesville became an incorporated city in 1915.
Bartlesville rapidly developed as a regional center of commerce and government for the growing oil industry and surrounding agriculture. The city independent school district was established in 1918 and within a few years built Bartlesville High School. The city’s first hospital, Austin Minor Hospital, opened in 1919.
