History of Barberton

Barberton is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,550 at the 2010 census. It is a commuter town in the Akron metropolitan area.

Barberton was founded in 1891 by Ohio Columbus Barber, who envisioned it as a “New England style” community. It was originally known as New Manchester, but its name was changed to Barberton in 1894. Located in southern Summit County, Barberton straddles the border of Wayne and Barberton—two townships that later became the cities of Norton and Wadsworth, respectively.

The city has undergone several changes since its founding, most notably the effects of suburbanization and deindustrialization. The city’s downtown area, once the primary shopping district for the entire region, has declined in recent years, while its residential neighborhoods have grown rapidly. Despite these changes, Barberton still retains a strong sense of community and pride in its history.

In 1891, the Ohio Columbus Barber Company purchased land northeast of Akron with the intention of establishing a model community. The company laid out streets and sidewalks, planted trees, and built houses and a hotel. The community was originally called New Manchester, after Barber’s hometown in England, but its name was changed to Barberton in 1894.

The city was incorporated in 1895 and soon attracted a population of Welsh and German immigrants who came to work in the coal mines and factories. The population continued to grow rapidly, reaching 9,000 by 1900.

The city’s industries prospered in the early 20th century, and Barberton became known as the “Magic City” for its rapid growth. The city’s coal mines produced millions of tons of coal, and its factories manufactured rubbers, textiles, and metals.

The city’s population peaked at 28,000 in 1930, but the Great Depression and the decline of the coal and manufacturing industries led to a decline in the city’s population. The population began to rebound in the 1970s, however, and has continued to grow in recent years.

Today, Barberton is a diverse city with a population of 26,550. Its residents are employed in a variety of industries, including healthcare, education, manufacturing, and retail. The city’s downtown area has undergone revitalization in recent years, and its residential neighborhoods are growing. Despite the changes it has experienced, Barberton still retains a strong sense of community and pride in its history.
