History of Atchison
Atchison is a city located in the northeastern corner of the state of Kansas in the United States. The city’s population was 11,037 at the 2010 census. The city is named in honor of David Atchison, a United States senator from Missouri who helped westward expansion in the 19th century.
Atchison was founded in 1854 by Doctor John Stringfellow, a steamboat pioneer and strong abolitionist, as a freestate town in the Nebraska Territory. It was named for Atchison, who had championed the concept of popular sovereignty, which allowed settlers in Kansas Territory to determine for themselves whether or not to allow slavery.
Abolitionists from Massachusetts trekked westward to settle in the new town, which was first called Atchison Landing. Within months, however, proslavery residents from Missouri began moving across the border in droves, prompting violence and the eventual flight of the settlers back to the East.
With the advent of the Civil War, Atchison became a hotbed of secession and home to several notorious outlaws, most notably Bloody Bill Anderson and the James Gang. The town was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom in the North.
