History of Anadarko

Anadarko is a city in Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 6,762 at the 2010 census, an 11.35 percent increase from 6,097 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Caddo County.

The town was named for the Nadarko tribe of native Americans, who once inhabited the area.

The first EuropeanAmerican settlers arrived in the 1860s to farm the land. In 1898, the westwardmoving Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached the town, giving it access to new markets and opportunities.

Oil was discovered in the area in 1901, and the town soon became a boomtown by 1903. The population grew to over 10,000 by the early 1920s.

The oil industry declined in the 1930s, but Anadarko remained an important transportation hub for the region. The city’s population has remained relatively steady since the 1940s.

In the 1960s, the city began to diversify its economy, with the addition of a potash mine and a large red Napa auto parts plant.

Today, the city is home to a diverse array of businesses, including oil and gas production, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism.
