History of Abingdon
Abingdon is a town in Washington County, Virginia, United States, 123 miles southwest of Roanoke. The population was 8,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washington County and is a designated Virginia Historic Landmark. Abingdon is one of the oldest towns in Virginia and is the site of the first courthouse in the state.
Abingdon’s origins begin in 1748 when wealthy planter John Sevier (the future first governor of Tennessee) and land speculator Robert Preston established the town as a fort when they laid claim to the site. The town’s name changed several times until it was permanently named “Abingdon” in 1778 after the English town in Oxfordshire. It was settled by ScotchIrish immigrants in the late 18th century.
The town was part of the territorial dispute between Tennessee and Virginia, which was not settled until the 1880s. In 1918, the town became the site of an important bituminous coal strike by the United Mine Workers of America.
During World War II, the U.S. Navy established a supply depot in Abingdon. That prompted construction of the Virginia Creeper Trail (now a 34mile Rails to Trails recreational path) to transport coal and supplies out of the area.
Today, Abingdon is a vibrant small town with a historic downtown district, a growing arts community, and several festivals and events throughout the year.
