History of Redmond (Oregon)
Redmond is a city in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. The population was 26,215 at the 2010 census. Redmond is the county seat of Deschutes County and is the commercial and cultural hub of Central Oregon. It is located on the eastern side of the Cascade Range, at an elevation of 3,730 feet (1,140 m), and is about 10 miles (16 km) north of Bend, 15 miles (24 km) south of Sisters, and 20 miles (32 km) east of Prineville. Redmond is part of the Bend, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Redmond was named after Seattle pioneer Lemuel “Redmond” P. Ferry (18271884), but was first known as Aquila, the Latin word for “eagle”. The name was changed to Bridgeford in 1924, and subsequently to Redmond in 1929.
The first settlers in the Redmond area were pioneers that arrived in the 1860s. These early settlers were primarily drawn to the region by the presence of Cascade timber and fertile farmland. The Cascade Timber Company (later renamed the Redmond Lumber Company) was founded in 1868, and was the first major industry in the area. The company logging operations led to the clearing of large tracts of land in the area, which were subsequently developed for agricultural use.
