The city of Union was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 23, 1808, from portions of Elizabeth Township and Newark Township. It was reincorporated as a city on April 17, 1974, with the merger of Union Township and the city of Westfield.

The city is home to Kean University, which was established in 1855. The university’s campus covers approximately 150 acres (0.61 km2) and is home to nine academic buildings, two residence halls, a recreation center, and a stadium.
