History of Wincanton
The history of Wincanton can be traced back to the Roman era when the town was known as Vindocinium. The name is thought to mean ‘place of wind’ or ‘points of the wind’. The town was located on a ridgeway which made it an ideal spot for a settlement. There is evidence of occupation in the form of a Roman villa and a number of pottery fragments which have been found in the area.
The Saxons also settled in the area and the town is thought to have been known as Winceletun meaning ‘settlement of the Hwicce tribe’. The town prospered during the Saxon period and became a market town. It was also the site of a mint which produced coins for the Saxon king, Alfred the Great.
The Normans conquered England in 1066 and Wincanton soon came under their control. The town was given to William de Moels who built a castle here. The castle was located on the site of the present day market square.
Wincanton continued to prosper during the medieval period and in 1288 it was granted a charter by King Edward I. This gave the town the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. The market square was also the site of the town’s corn exchange and livestock market.
During the English Civil War, Wincanton was a Royalist town and the castle was captured by Parliamentarian forces. The castle was slighted (damaged) so that it could not be used by the enemy.
Despite the damage inflicted during the war, Wincanton continued to prosper and in the 18th century it became famous for its coaching inns. At this time the town was an important stopping point for stagecoaches travelling between London and Exeter.
The coming of the railways in the 19th century spelt the end of Wincanton’s role as a coaching town. However, the town continued to grow and in 1894 it was granted urban district status.
