Wetheral is a village and civil parish in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. It had a population of 1,040 at the time of the 2011 census. The village is located on the A6 road, about 9mi northeast of Carlisle. It is notable for its Roman remains and for Wetheral Priory, which was founded by King William II of England in 1092.

The name Wetheral is thought to derive from the Old English words wether, meaning ‘sheep’, and halh, meaning ‘corner or nook’. It was first recorded as Wedderhale in 1196.
The village is mentioned in the 12th century Chronicles of John of Fordun as one of the places at which the body of Saint Cuthbert rested on its journey from Lindisfarne to Durham.
Wetheral was historically a part of Cumberland, but was transferred to Cumbria in 1974.
The village is home to Wetheral Priory, a 12thcentury Augustinian priory, and to Wetheral Abbey, a ruined 14thcentury Benedictine monastery.
