Wahiawa is a censusdesignated place (CDP) and city located in Hawaii County on the island of Oahu in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The population was 16,617 at the 2010 census. Wahiawa is located in the “central plain” of Oahu. The Budweiser and Hawaii Dairy Farms breweries are located in Wahiawa. The U.S. Army’s Schofield Barracks is located in the eastern part of Wahiawa near Whitmore Village. Waialua is north of Lahilahi and south of Kunia and Makakilo. The town’s name means “two waters” or “double stream” in Hawaiian, referring to the two artesian springs, Kapena Spring and Kumuena Spring, in the area. A fresh water pond called Lake Wilson (also known as Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area) is also located in Wahiawa.
History of Wahiawa
The city of Wahiawa is located on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. The island is home to the worldfamous Waikiki Beach as well as the U.S. Army’s Schofield Barracks. Wahiawa is located just north of Schofield Barracks and is surrounded by the communities of Mililani, Whitmore Village, and Kunia.
The name “Wahiawa” means “messenger of adz” in the Hawaiian language. The name is derived from the legend of a native Hawaiian chief who was killed in a battle with rival tribes. His body was kept in a cave near presentday Wahiawa, and his spirit is said to have come back as a white bird to warn the people of impending danger.
The first Europeans to settle in the area were sugar plantation workers from China, Japan, Portugal, and the Philippines. These workers brought their families with them, and the community of Wahiawa began to grow. The sugar plantation era came to an end in the early twentieth century, and many of the plantation workers left Wahiawa to find work in other parts of Hawaii or on the mainland United States.
