History of Truro
Truro is a city in southwest England, within the county of Cornwall. Truro grew as a market and administrative center, and its charter was granted in 1608. The city’s cathedral was built in the late 19th century and is notable for its Gothic revival architecture. The city asserted its independence from Cornwall County Council in 1889, although County Hall continues to be located in the city.
Truro’s history is long and varied. The city’s origins date back to the Iron Age, when the hillfort of “Trurow” was established. The name “Truro” is thought to derive from the Old Cornish word “triveru” meaning “three rivers”, in reference to the three rivers that converge at the site of the hillfort: the Kenwyn, the Allan, and the River Truro.
During the Roman era, a settlement known as “Por Armen” developed near the site of the hillfort. This settlement served as a port for the nearby city of Isca Dumnoniorum (now Exeter). In the 5th century, the Saxons invaded Cornwall and drove the Britons westward. The Saxons established their own settlement at the site of Por Armen, which they called “Treuro”.
The Norman Conquest of England began in 1066, and in 1067 William the Conqueror issued a charter for a new castle at Treuro. The castle was built by Robert, Count of Mortain, William’s halfbrother. The town that grew up around the castle became known as “New Truro”.
In the 12th century, Henry II granted a charter for a weekly market at New Truro. In the 13th century, Truro became an important port, exporting tin, wool, and corn. By the 14th century, it was one of the largest ports in Cornwall.
In 1608, King James I granted Truro a charter making it a city. In the 18th century, Truro’s prosperity declined due to the decline of the Cornwall’s tinmining industry. However, the city revived in the 19th century with the growth of the Cornwall china clay industry.
The Truro Cathedral was built in the late 19th century and is notable for its Gothic revival architecture. In 1889, Truro asserted its independence from Cornwall County Council. County Hall is still located in the city, however.
