History of Southend-On-Sea
SouthendonSea is a seaside resort town in the county of Essex in southern England, with a population of over 177,000. It is situated on the Thames Estuary, 40 miles east of London. It is the terminus of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway and has two mainline railway stations, Southend Central and Southend Victoria. There are also two smaller stations, Eastleigh and Prittlewell. The town is served by an international airport, London Southend Airport.
The first record of SouthendonSea is in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was called Sulham. It originally formed part of the parish of Prittlewell, which also included the adjoining village of LeighonSea. In the 13th century, LeighonSea became a separate parish and Southend became known as South End. The South End area was subject to frequent flooding from the rivers Thames and Leigh, and in 1718 work began on the construction of a sea wall to protect the town. This was completed in 1724.
During the 18th century, the town became a popular seaside resort for the wealthy Londoners who came to escape the city’s heat in summer. Seaside houses and hotels were built and the town’s pier, the first in England, was constructed in 1830. In 1837, the first railway link to London was established and this led to further growth in the town.
During World War II, Southend was heavily bombed by the German Luftwaffe and many of the town’s historic buildings were destroyed.
