History of Rawmarsh

Rawmarsh is a town in South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the border with West Yorkshire, on the River Dearne and in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. The town has a population of around 16,000.

Rawmarsh was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, when it was called Hraudesmere. At that time, it was part of the manor of Rotherham. The name Rawmarsh is thought to mean ‘reed marsh’, referring to the marshy ground on which the town is built.

In the 12th century, Rawmarsh was granted a market charter by King Henry I. The market was held every Thursday and was one of the most important in the area. It continued to be held until the early 20th century.

During the Industrial Revolution, Rawmarsh became a major centre for coal mining and iron foundries. The Dearne and Dove Canal was built to transport coal from the mines to the River Don, and later the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway ran through the town.

At its peak, the population of Rawmarsh increased from around 1,000 in 1800 to over 10,000 by 1900. However, after the Second World War, the coal mines and iron foundries began to close down, and the town’s population began to decline.

Today, Rawmarsh is a commuter town for Sheffield and Rotherham. There are still some manufacturing businesses in the town, but the main employers are now in the service sector.

The town centre has been redeveloped in recent years, and there is now a library, a health centre, a leisure centre and a daily market. Rawmarsh also has a number of primary and secondary schools.
