History of Kenosha
Kenosha, Wisconsin, is a Midwestern city on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. It is the county seat of Kenosha County. Milwaukee and Chicago are about an hour drive from Kenosha.
The area now known as Kenosha was first settled by Native Americans around two thousand years ago. In the 17th century, the French explorers Lacrosse and Marin came to the area. By the early 1800s, the American settlers had arrived. The first permanent settler in the area was George Wade, who built a cabin in the territory in 1835.
In 1850, the first steampowered sawmill was built on the Pike River. The growing lumber industry led to the incorporation of the city of Kenosha in 1855. The city was named after the county, which in turn was named for the Potawatomi Chief Kinosh, who had signed a treaty with the United States government in 1833.
