History of Kawaihae

Kawaihae is a historic port city on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was once a busy whaling and trading center, and later became an important sugarcane port.

The first Europeans to visit Kawaihae were the members of Captain James Cook’s expedition in 1779. Cook named the bay “Kealakekua” (meaning “pathway of the gods” in Hawaiian). A few years later, in 1786, the first ship carrying Chinese migrants arrived in Kawaihae.

Whaling ships began to use Kawaihae as a base in the early 1800s, and the city became an important center for the whaling industry. In 1819, the first Christian missionaries arrived in Kawaihae, and a church was soon established.

Sugar production began in Kawaihae in the 1850s, and the city became an important port for exporting sugarcane. It was also used as a base for military operations during the American Civil War.

In the late 1800s, Kawaihae began to decline in importance as the whaling industry declined and sugar production shifted to other parts of the island. Today, Kawaihae is a sleepy fishing village with a population of just over 1,000. It is still possible to see some of the historic buildings from its days as a whaling and sugar port.
