History of Houlton

The city of Houlton is located in the state of Maine, in the United States. The city has a long and rich history dating back to the early 19th century.

The first settlers in the area were from the British colony of New Brunswick. In 1804, the area was surveyed and divided into townships. The town of Houlton was incorporated in 1810.

The city grew quickly due to the lumber and potato industries. The population reached 1,000 by 1820. By the 1850s, the city was the largest in Aroostook County.

During the Civil War, Houlton was a stopping point for Union soldiers on their way to the front lines. The city was also a center of activity for the Underground Railroad.
