History of Garstang
The first recorded history of Garstang dates back to the Domesday Book in 1086. The name Garstang is thought to mean “settlement by the ridge”, referring to the high ground to the east of the River Wyre.
The town was granted a market charter by King Henry III in 1267, and grew steadily in the following centuries as a market town and hub for the local agricultural economy. The wool and linen industries were also important in the town’s history.
