History of Fort Myers
Fort Myers, Florida was founded in 1886. The city was named after Colonel Abraham Myers, who was the head of the Armed Occupation Act colony in the area. Fort Myers is located in southwestern Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. The city is the county seat of Lee County and is the gateway to the Southwest Florida region. The population of Fort Myers was 62,298 in 2019.
The Calusa and the Seminole were the first known inhabitants of the area. The Calusa were a Native American tribe who inhabited the southwest coast of Florida. The Seminole were a Native American tribe who migrated from Georgia and Alabama to Florida in the 18th century. The two tribes clashed, and the Seminole were eventually pushed into the Everglades.
In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon became the first European to reach Florida. He claimed the land for Spain and named it La Florida. In 1521, Ponce de Leon was killed by a Native American arrow while attempting to invade the Calusa village of Maimi.
In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris. The British divided Florida into two colonies, East Florida and West Florida. Fort Myers was part of West Florida.
In 1783, Florida was returned to Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris. The British had defeated Spain in the American Revolutionary War.
