History of Fort Lauderdale

In the early 1820s, a few hundred Seminole Indians living in camps along the New River slowly began moving south. The Indians found the New River fascinating because it flowed from north to south instead of east to west like most rivers in North America. The Seminole settled on the land because of its access to the Everglades, which were full of fish, game and turtles. When the Indians started to settle in the area, they were met with resistance from the United States government, which was trying to force the Seminole out of Florida. In 1837, the Seminoles and the U.S. government agreed to the Second Seminole War, which resulted in the Indian removal from the area.

After the Second Seminole War ended, the area was turned into a U.S. military reservation. Around this time, the first nonIndian settlers, mostly ranchers, started to move into the area. In 1862, the U.S. military abandoned the reservation and left the area for good. The first permanent white settler in the area was Frank Stranahan, who built a trading post along the New River in 1866. Fort Lauderdale was officially incorporated as a city in 1911.

During the early 1900s, Fort Lauderdale developed into a resort town, attracting tourists from across the United States. The city’s canals and rivers were dredged, making them deeper and wider, which allowed for more leisure boats to dock in the city. In addition, a number of hotels and restaurants were built along the beaches. Fort Lauderdale became known as the “Venice of America” because of its expansive canals.

The city continued to grow throughout the twentieth century. In 1926, the Florida Land Boom resulted in a construction boom in the city, which led to the development of new residential areas and an increase in the city’s population. The construction boom came to an end in the late 1920s, but Fort Lauderdale continued to grow as a tourist destination.

The city was impacted by a number of hurricanes throughout its history, including the 1926 Miami Hurricane, which brought high winds and flooding to the area. In 1947, Hurricane King caused extensive damage to the city, resulting in the deaths of seventeen people and the destruction of hundreds of homes.

Fort Lauderdale underwent a period of urbanization and growth in the 1950s and 1960s. This growth was spurred by the development of interstate highways, which made the city more accessible to visitors from across the country. In addition, the city’s port was expanded, making it one of the busiest ports in the United States.

The city continued to grow in the 1970s and 1980s. A number of highrise condominiums and office buildings were constructed in the downtown area. In addition, the city’s beachfront was redeveloped, and a number of new hotels and restaurants were built.

Today, Fort Lauderdale is a major tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the world. The city is home to a number of hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions. In addition, the city’s canals and rivers are a popular destination for boaters and fishermen.
