History of Ely (Minnesota)
Ely, Minnesota is a city in the United States. The population was 3,627 at the 2010 census. Ely was founded in 1883 and was named after its first postmaster, Elias Peterson. The city is situated on the shores of Shagawa Lake and is surrounded by the Superior National Forest.
Ely was originally settled as a logging community and was known as Poplar Creek. In 1866, a sawmill was built on the lake and the community began to grow. By 1869, there was a hotel, blacksmith, and general store. In 1875, the first school was built and the city was platted. Ely was incorporated as a city in 1881.
The city grew rapidly in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The population reached nearly 5,000 by 1920. The iron ore industry played a large role in the city’s growth.
