History of Edmond
Edmond was originally settled in 1844 when the land that would become Edmond was bought from the Creek Nation by two men, Jedidiah Wilkes Edwards and George Aaron Bourne. They named their new settlement “Edmond’s Station” after Edwards’ old home station in Kentucky. The first post office was established in 1849 and the Edmond town site was plotted in April of 1887. The city was formally incorporated in December of 1894.
Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, Edmond grew steadily. The population reached 1,377 by 1907. In 1910, the first streets were paved and, by 1925, Edmond had grown to 3,4182 people. The population exploded after World War II, jumping from 4,711 in 1950 to 12,623 by 1960.
