History of Austin (Texas)
The city of Austin is the capital of Texas and is located in the southcentral part of the state. Founded in 1839, it was originally named Waterloo, but was renamed Austin in 1839 after Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas.” It is the 11th most populous city in the United States and the 4th most populous city in Texas.
The first human inhabitants of the area that is now Austin were the Tonkawa, who lived here for around 10,000 years. In the late 1700s, the Spanish established a number of missions in the area, including San Antonio de Valero (known today as the Alamo) and San Francisco de la Espada. In 1821, Mexico won independence from Spain, and the area became part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas.
In 1836, Texas won independence from Mexico, and Austin became the capital of the new Republic of Texas. After Texas joined the United States in 1845, Austin remained the capital of the state. During the Civil War, Austin was the only Confederate capital west of the Mississippi River that did not fall to Union forces.
After the war, Austin grew rapidly. The University of Texas at Austin was established in 1883, and the state capitol building was completed in 1888. In the early 20th century, Austin became known as the “City of the Violet Crown” for its beautiful hills and wildflowers.
Today, Austin is a thriving city with a vibrant culture and economy. It is home to a number of major corporations, as well as the University of Texas. Austin is also known for its music scene, and is home to the annual South by Southwest music festival.
