History of Atherton

The name Atherton first appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is listed as Aderton,

a small farmstead belonging to the larger Manor of Westhaverton. By 1240, the Manor of Atherton

had been formed from Westhaverton and other smaller holdings, and it remained in the hands of

the same lady and her descendants until the early 1600s.

Atherton developed slowly over the centuries. In the 13th century, a chapel was built in the

manor house, and in the 14th century the village was given a market charter. In the 15th

century, the village church was rebuilt and the first grammar school was established.

Atherton only really began to grow in the 19th century, when the Manchester to Liverpool

railway was built through the village. This led to the establishment of several coal mines in

the area, and the population of the village exploded. By the end of the century, Atherton

had become a prosperous industrial town, with a population of over 10,000.

The 20th century saw further growth, with the opening of more coal mines and the

establishment of an electricity generating station. During the Second World War, Atherton

was an important target for German bombing, due to the industrial activity in the town.

In the second half of the 20th century, Atherton began to decline, as the coal mines closed

one by one. The last mine finally shut in 1992, and since then the town has been trying to

regenerate itself. These days, Atherton is a quiet, sleepy town, but it is still proud of its

industrial heritage.
