History of Anderson (South Carolina)
South Carolina’s Anderson County was named for Robert Anderson, who commanded Fort Sumter during the Civil War. The county seat, the city of Anderson, also honors his memory. The city of Anderson is located in the northwest corner of South Carolina, about 30 miles from the Georgia border and about 100 miles from the state capital of Columbia.
The earliest settlers in the Anderson area were Cherokee Indians. The first European settlers were ScotsIrish immigrants who settled in the backcountry of the Carolinas in the mid1700s. They were followed by German and English migrants.
In 1790, the Anderson district was created as a judicial district within NinetySix District. The district was named for Colonel Robert Anderson, who was a hero of the American Revolution. Andersonville, a village in the district, was named for Anderson’s grandfather, Chief William Anderson.
The city of Anderson was chartered in 1826 and named for Robert Anderson. It became the county seat in 1828. The city was built on a grid plan with streets running north and south and east and west. The main street was Market Street, which was later renamed South Main Street.
Anderson grew slowly in its early years. In 1837, the population was only about 400. The city began to grow rapidly after the coming of the railroad in the 1850s. Anderson was connected to the outside world by the Atlanta & Charlotte Air Line Railway in 1873 and by the Blue Ridge Railway in 1881.
The city continued to grow in the early 20th century. Anderson College (now Anderson University) was founded in 1911. By 1930, the population of the city was about 9,000.
The city suffered damage during the Civil War. On February 15, 1865, Union troops under General William T. Sherman burned much of the city during their “March to the Sea.” After the war, the city was rebuilt.
In the late 20th century, Anderson’s economy began to decline. The city’s textile mills began to close in the 1970s and 1980s. The city’s population peaked in 1970 at about 26,000. It began to decline after that, falling to about 21,000 by 1990.
The city has begun to rebound in recent years. The number of people living in the city has increased since 1990. And new businesses have opened in the downtown area.
Today, Anderson is a small city with a population of about 27,000. It is a center for education, with Anderson University and TriCounty Technical College located here. The city is also home to the Carolina Renaissance Festival, which is held every year in October.
