About Travemunde
Travemunde is a borough of Lubeck located right next to the Baltic Sea and split in two by the river Trave. It has been a popular seaside resort for years and has even been named the “St Tropez of Germany” in the past. It is also a harbour town with many cargo and passenger ferries passing through from the Baltic states and Scandinavia. Today, it still remains a popular seaside resort for families to visit.
How To Get There
Since Travemunde is a port town, there are a number of ways to get into town. They include by train, car, bus and boat.
By Train
From the main station in Lubeck, you will find that the trains will regularly travel to Travemunde. There is a train almost every hour that will get you to Travemunde. Check with Deutsche Bahn’s website for timetables.
By Car
If travelling by car, you will be able to get to Travemunde by taking Autobahn A1. You will find that Travemunde is directly connected to Hamburg and Lubeck.
By Bus
From Lubeck, take bus routes number 30, 31 and 40. The bus operator is SV Lubeck. A single adult ticket will cost roughly 3 euros.
By Boat
Depending on where you are coming from, there are different ferry companies that will bring you into Travemunde. Here are some well-known operators:

Getting Around Travemunde
Since the main streets and sea promenade of Travemunde is meant for cyclists and pedestrians only, you won’t be able to get around that easily by motorised transport. You’ll find that the best way to get around is by bicycle and foot. This will allow you to enjoy the scenery of the beach and town.
There are buses that will take you into town from the train station.
When To Visit Travemunde
When is the best time to visit Travemunde? Well, it depends on whether you enjoy the warm weather at the beach or a cool weather for strolling around town.
Typically the warmest months for Travemunde is from June to August. If you are a beach-goer, you will probably enjoy visiting Travemunde during this time. However, if you prefer cooler weather then January is the coolest month on average.
Things to See and Do in Travemunde
1. See the Flying P-Liner Passat Museum Ship
The Passat is one of the last of its kind in the world and was made by the famous German shipping company F. Laeisz. It has been anchored in Travemunde since 1960 and has since become a tourist landmark for the city. It also makes a great photo opportunity!
2. Old Lighthouse & Maritime Museum
The old lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Germany. It’s 31 metres high and is situated on the Trave promenade. It’s a great place for sea views and watching the ships pass by. The lighthouse also has a maritime museum where you can see various artefacts and maritime information. For a few euros, it’s worth visiting to look over the bay of Travemunde.
3. Visit The Beach And Stroll Down The Promenade
The main beach is Travemunde’s main tourist attraction and the 1.7km of white sand is growing by one centimetre each year. It’s a great place for fun summertime activities such as beach volleyball, building sandcastles, bathing in the sun and strolling by the seaside.
There is also a beach promenade in the area, where you can partake in leisure activities and access picnic areas. Within the promenade, there is the “Strandterrasse” where you can take a seat and enjoy the views of the Bay of Lubeck.
The “Promenadensteg” is a 60-metre walkway that allows visitors to see the entire promenade, the sea and the beach. The “Seegarten” also has sea views, as well as barbeque stations and seating options for a nice meal by the esplanade.
There is also a pirates playground to keep the children busy, while the adults have their conversations.
4. Fisherman’s Harbour
You can experience the maritime side of Travemunde by visiting the Fisherman’s harbour. There is freshly caught fish for sale as well as a snack bar with tasty fish rolls and other fresh specialties for you to try.
5. Seaside Resort Museum
If you want to discover the maritime history of Travemunde, visit the seaside resort museum. Here you will find films, audio stations and other exhibits about the town related to fishing, shipping, beachwear and more. Learn about what life was like from 1802 to today.
6. Ostseestation Priwall
The Ostseestation Priwall is an environmental centre and aquarium with many types of marine life. It’s located on the Priwall Peninsula in Travemunde. You can learn about the many species of wildlife, and it’s an interesting place to bring children too.
7. Old Bailiwick
The old bailiwick building is a former police station that recently celebrated its 465th anniversary in 2016. The building itself has an interesting architecture, and it gives a historical feeling to what guests might have seen when they visited many years ago.
Today, there is a restaurant, wine bar and tea shop located in the building.
8. St. Lorenz Church
This large church has lasted for over 450 years. Its altar was carved by Hieronymus Jakob Hassenberg and it’s the main centrepiece for the church’s nave. The church is an interesting historical landmark to visit while travelling through Travemunde.

Gorgeous walk on top of the cliffs. Offers amazing views, but please pay attention!
