History of Newport (Vermont)
Newport is a city in the New England state of Vermont. The city is the shire town of Orleans County and the seat of the county government. The population was 4,512 at the 2010 census. Newport is notable for being the home town of U.S. President Calvin Coolidge.
The area that is now Newport was first settled in 1763 by Zenas Powell and his family. In 1766, New Hampshire granted the town of Newport to Stephen Trask and Zephaniah Swift, who had first proposed the establishment of the town. Trask and Swift unsuccessfully attempted to Paddock Park, lot with governance to New Hampshire in 1767. They then petitioned the Vermont General Assembly, which granted the town to Vermont in 1781. The town was first settled in 1783 by Timothy Robbins, who built the first dwelling in town.
By 1800, the population had reached 1,000. The town was incorporated in 1814. In 1824, the county seat was moved to Newport from Glover.
Newport grew rapidly in the nineteenth century as a center of trade and manufacturing in the Orleans County region. Lumber and wood products were early industries, followed by furniture making, machine shops, foundries, and paper mills. The county courthouse and jail were built in Newport in 182728. The Second Baptist Church was founded in 1829.
In 1831, the Vermont Tribune, the first newspaper in Orleans County, was established in Newport. The Newport Bank was chartered in 1832. Three years later, the first fire company was organized.
The 1850 census showed Newport to be the most populous town in the county, with a population of 2,eptember 1, 1856, fire destroyed much of the business district of Newport. The opera house and fifteen other buildings were lost.
In 1858, the first public high school in Orleans County was established in Newport. The following year, the county grammar school was founded. In 1867, the first public library in the county was opened in Newport.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Newport was a destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the scenery of the area and to participate in the many outdoor activities available, such as fishing, hunting, and skiing. Several large hotels were built to accommodate the visitors.
The arrival of the railroad in 1871 made it possible for Newport to become a significant shipping point for the agricultural products of the county. The central business district of Newport was destroyed by fire in August of 1873, but the city quickly rebuilt.
In the early twentieth century, the city continued to grow, with the addition of new factories, churches, and schools. President Calvin Coolidge, who was born in Newport, spent much of his childhood in the city and attended the local schools. A monument to Coolidge was erected in his honor in 1927.
The Great Depression of the 1930s hit Newport hard, as factories closed and farmers struggled. The city’s economy began to rebound in the late 1930s, however, with the start of construction on the dams and power plants of the Connecticut River Project. The project brought new jobs to the area, and by the 1940s, Newport was once again flourishing.
The city continued to grow in the second half of the twentieth century, with new industries, businesses, and neighborhoods being added. In recent years, Newport has become home to several hightech companies. The downtown area has been revitalized, and the city is once again a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.
