Sights in Zion
Zion National Park is an American national park located in southwestern Utah near the city of Springdale. A prominent remnant of the last Ice Age, the park has an abundance of plant and animal life, as well as canyons, rivers, and other unique geological features. The Kolob Canyons section of the park was designated a national monument in 1937.
Ancestors of the Pueblo people lived in the area of Zion National Park as early as 6000 BC. In the early 1800s, Mormon pioneers settled in the area, and in 1848, the first Mormon colony in Utah was established at nearby Pine Valley. Two Mormon men, Isaac Behunin and Phillip Kasteler, were among the first to explored the area that would become Zion National Park.
In 1909, President William Howard Taft established Mukuntuweap National Monument (later renamed Zion National Monument) in the western part of the Colorado Plateau. The United States Congress created Zion National Park on November 19, 1919. The park originally encompassed 147,597 acres (59,595 ha). In 1926, the north rim of the Grand Canyon was included in the park boundaries.
The Kolob Canyons section, located to the north of the main park, was originally part of Zion National Monument, but׃it was redesignated as a separate national monument in 1937. It was absorbed into Zion National Park in 1956.
The park experienced drastic changes in the 1960s and 1970s, as roads were built and visitor facilities were improved. In nine years, from 1962 to 1971, the number of visitors to the park increased from 400,000 to 2.5 million. Commercial development outside the park boundaries began to encroach on the park, and in the late 1970s, the National Park Service began to consider alternatives to further development.
A comprehensive management plan was completed in 1988, and in 1991, Congress passed the Zion National Park and Kolob Canyons National Monument Protection Act. This act added 87,784 acres (35,619 ha) to the park and designate 997 acres (403 ha) of land in the park as wilderness.
The park is open all year, but the busiest times are March through October. Some areas of the park, including the Narrows, are only accessible by foot or shuttle bus. The Angels Landing hike is a popular strenuous hike to the top of a 1,488foot (453 m) tall rock formation. Other popular trails include the Emerald Pools, Canyon Overlook, Weeping Rock, and Riverside Walk.
