Zanesville is a city in and the county seat of Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,487 at the 2010 census. Zanesville is located 35 miles (56 km) eastsoutheast of Columbus.
The National Road and Zane’s Trace, which ran through the city, were built during the early 19th century. In 1825, the Muskingum Academy was founded in the city. Music and art education have been part of the public school curriculum since 1857.
The city has five historic districts that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A sixth district, Allied PaperProduct Company, was added in 2010.
The city is also home to the Zanesville YBridge, the only remaining covered bridge with this design.

History of Zanesville
Zanesville is a city located in the eastern United States in the state of Ohio. The city is the county seat of Muskingum County, and has a population of around 25,000 people. The city was founded in 1804 by Ebenezer Zane, who also helped to build Zane’s Trace, a road which ran from Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Maysville, Kentucky. The city was named after Zane.
The city grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal, which ran through the city. The canal allowed for the transportation of goods and people between the eastern and western United States. The city became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of routes and safe houses used by abolitionists to assist slaves in escaping to freedom in the North.
The American Civil War (18611865) impacted the city, as many of the residents were strongly opposed to slavery and secession. The city was also home to a large number of manufacturing plants, which provided supplies for the Union army.
Following the war, the city continued to grow and prosper. It became known for its pottery and ceramic industry, and was also home to a number of schools and universities.
