History of Youngstown
The history of Youngstown, Ohio, began with the settlement of James Heaton’s mahoningtown in 1796. Heaton (17531826) was a Quaker who had migrated to Ohio from Pennsylvania in 1789. Heaton laid out his town in 1800, and it soon became the county seat of Mahoning County. Youngstown was incorporated as a village in 1802 and as a city in 1848.
The city’s early growth was due in part to its location at the intersection of two major Native American trails, the Mahoning and the Beaver Paths. These trails were later used by settlers and became known as the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. The canal helped to fuel the city’s growth as a manufacturing center in the nineteenth century.
The city’s manufacturing base expanded in the early twentieth century with the addition of steel mills. The city soon became known as the “Steel Capital of the World.” The city’s population grew rapidly in the first half of the twentieth century, reaching a peak of nearly 169,000 in 1960.
The city experienced a serious decline in the second half of the twentieth century, as the steel industry went into decline. The city’s population fell to less than 66,000 by 2010.
