History of Wootton
Wootton is a historic market town in the Borough of Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire. It is located on the A41 road, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Aylesbury and 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Bicester. The town is twinned with Fulda in Germany.
The town’s name is AngloSaxon in origin, and means ‘farmstead in a clearing in the woods’. In the Domesday Book of 1086, it is recorded as Uluetone.
The town was granted a charter to hold a weekly market by King Henry III in 1226. It continued to prosper as a market town until the coming of the railway in 1868, after which trade declined.
In the 20th century, the town grew rapidly as a commuter settlement for London and its surrounding area. The census of 2011 recorded Wootton’s population as 9,835.
The town has a number of historic buildings, including the Grade I listed Church of St Peter and St Paul, which dates from the 13th century. The town also has a museum, library, theatre and a number of schools.
Wootton is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is recorded as Uluetone. The book gives the following account:
“In Wootton Hundred, Ulward (sic) holds 5 hides. Land for 6 ploughs. In lordship 3 hides; 2 slaves. 8 villagers with a priest and 4 smallholders have 5 ploughs. Meadow for 6 ploughs. Woodland 400 pigs.”
In the 12th century, a priory was founded in the town by Roger de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Warwick. In 1226, the town was granted a charter to hold a weekly market by King Henry III.
