History of Wooster
Wooster /ˈwʊstər/ is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Wayne County. The municipality is located in northeastern Ohio, approximately 40 miles (64 km)south of Cleveland and 66 miles (106 km) north of Columbus. Wooster has a population of 26,119 according to the 2010 U.S. census. The city is notable for being the site of the headquarters and original campus of The College of Wooster.
The city was settled in 1808 by John Bever, William Henry, and Joseph Larwill, and officially incorporated in 1817. The origin of the name is disputed, though most believe it was named after David Wooster, a general in the American Revolutionary War. The community was originally part of a larger tract purchased by Moses Byxbe in 1798.
The first schoolhouse was built in 1814, and the first church was organized in 1817. Both Wrightsville (now a ghost town)and Wooster competed to be the county seat in 1818, with Wooster being victorious. The construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal in the 1820s brought increased trade and development to the area.
The city was devastated by a flood in 1913, which killed 31 people and caused $3 million in damage. The city recovered, however, and continued to grow in the 1920s and 1930s.
The Advance Wooster, a daily newspaper, was founded inWooster in 1922. The woolybear caterpillar festival began in 1961 and has been held annually since then.
The Wayne County Fair is the oldest continuously operating county fair in Ohio, having been founded in 1846. It is held every September.
