History of Woonsocket
In the early 1600s, Woonsocket was inhabited by the Nipmuc, an Algonquianspeaking tribe. The town is named after Algonquian chief Woonsocket, who governed the area at the time. In 1642, Massachusetts Bay Colony granted a charter to Roger Williams for Providence Plantations, which included the area that is now Woonsocket. In 1724, the first white settlers, led by James and William Wall, arrived from Smithfield, Rhode Island. In 1731, Benjamin Church built a sawmill on the Blackstone River.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Woonsocket became an important manufacturing center. Slater Mill, founded in 1793 by Samuel Slater, was the first commercially successful waterpowered cotton spinning mill in America. Other factories followed, producing textiles, shoes, buttons, combs, and other goods.By the mid19th century, Woonsocket had become one of the largest mill towns in the United States, with a population of over 30,000.
Woonsocket’s growth continued in the 20th century. In 1910, the town was incorporated as a city. The same year, the Woonsocket Call, a daily newspaper, began publication. In 1955, Landmark Medical Center, a teaching hospital affiliated with Brown University, opened.
