Woodley is a town in the English county of Berkshire. It is located within the unitary authority of Reading, and is about 10 miles (16 km) east of the county town of Reading. Woodley has a population of about 25,000 people.
The town’s name is derived from the Old English words for ‘wood’ and ‘meadow’. Woodley was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and was later recorded as a manor in 1227.
The town’s church, St John the Baptist, dates from the 15th century. Woodley’s other main buildings include the Grade II listed Manor House, built in the early 18th century, and the former Woodley Aerodrome, which is now occupied by a business park.
The aerodrome was an important site during the Second World War, and was used by the Royal Air Force, the United States Army Air Forces, and the Soviet Air Force.
Woodley is located in the Thames Valley, and is about halfway between Reading and Wokingham. The town is served by Woodley railway station, which is on the Reading to Gatwick Airport Branch Line.

History of Woodley
Woodley is a town in England that has a long and varied history. The earliest known settlement in the area was a small Roman settlement known as Uriconium. This settlement was located near the site of modernday Woodley and was probably established around the 1st century AD. Uriconium was abandoned around the 5th century and there is little else known about the area until the arrival of the Saxons in the 6th century.
The Saxons established a settlement called Wudlea which grew to become a small town by the 10th century. Woodley was an important stopping point for pilgrims travelling to the shrine of St Edmund at Bury St Edmunds. The town was also a major producer of wool and had a thriving market.
Woodley was captured by the Normans in 1066 and became part of the vast estates of the Norman Lord, William de Warenne. The town continued to prosper and by the 13th century, it had a population of around 1,000.
Woodley was granted a charter in 1294 by King Edward I and this gave the town the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. The town continued to grow and prospered throughout the Middle Ages.
However, the Black Death hit Woodley hard in 1348 and the town never fully recovered. By the 16th century, the population had dwindled to just a few hundred.
The town remained fairly static until the 19th century when it began to grow once again. This growth was spurred by the coming of the railway in 1849. Woodley became a popular place to live for those working in London and the city began to expand.
