Woodland is a city in Yolo County, California, United States. It is the county seat and is approximately 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Sacramento. The population was 55,468 at the 2010 census.
Woodland’s origins lie in its founder, John Sutter. In 1847, he established Sutters Fort, which was later destroyed by Native Americans during the California Gold Rush. The city was rebuilt and incorporated in 1852 as Woodland. The city has 26 parks, including Spring Lake Park, community center, skate park, Wintun nation sports complex, and various other smaller parks throughout the town. There are also three pools located in Woodland. Woodland is home to the Yolo County Fairgrounds, which hosts the annual Yolo County Fair, as well as events such as the Davis Phishmeister Music Festival, and the Woodstock Music Festival.
The city has two museums. The Heidrick Ag History Center, an agricultural museum located on the Woodland Community College campus, and the Woodland Opera House, built in 1885 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Woodland Public Library is located in the city’s Historic Downtown. The Woodland Amtrak station is located near Downtown. Greyhound buses stop in Woodland. Woodland is also the location of Woodland Regional Airport.
History of Woodland
Woodland, California is a city in the northern part of the state and is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area. The population was 55,468 at the 2010 census. Woodland’s origins trace back to 1850 when California became a state and Yolo County was established. Since the town started as a stagecoach stop, it grew and prospered as a transportation hub for the agricultural industry in the region. The historic downtown is anchored by the Yolo County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The county fairgrounds are located just outside of downtown and play host to the annual Yolo County Fair.
The first post office was established in 1851 and the city was incorporated in 1871. The city is named after its founder, Gideon Wood, who originally settled in the area in 1852. Wood was a successful businessman and was also involved in politics, serving as a Yolo County supervisor and as a state assemblyman.
The Woodland area was originally home to the Patwin tribe of Native Americans. The Patwin were a peaceful people and had a good relationship with the early settlers. The tribe eventually moved to the Colusa Indian Reservation, where they remain to this day.
During the early years of Woodland’s history, the city was a major stop on the stagecoach line that ran between Sacramento and Marysville. The stagecoach not only carried passengers, but also freight such as mail and express.
