History of Woking
The first record of Woking was made in the Domesday Book in 1086, when it was described as a small village. However, it is believed that the area has been settled since the Stone Age.
The name ‘Woking’ comes from the Old English ‘woccing’, which means ‘dwelling place’ or ‘place of work’. The first part of the name may also come from the Celtic ‘wic’ meaning ‘settlement’.
In the 12th century, Woking was given to the Abbey of Farnham by Henry I. The Abbey built a hospital in Woking for the sick and needy, which was run by Augustinian monks.
During the medieval period, Woking grew slowly. In 1348, the Black Death reached the town and killed around a third of the population.
The Abbey of Farnham was dissolved in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. The hospital was closed and the monks were evicted from their premises.
The hospital buildings were acquired by a local family, the Onslows. They converted the buildings into a private residence, which they named Woking Palace.
The Onslow family owned Woking Palace until 1686, when it was sold to Sir Richard Onslow, 1st Baron Onslow. The Palace was then demolished and the materials were used to build Onslow House, which still stands today.
In 1759, the first steam engine was built in Woking by John Smeaton. This was the first of many industries that would come to the town, making it an important centre for industry and employment.
The first railway line in Woking was opened in 1838, connecting the town to London. This made Woking a popular place to live for commuters working in the capital.
The population of Woking grew rapidly in the 19th century, reaching over 8,000 by 1901.
Today, Woking is a thriving town with a population of around 100,000. It is home to a number of businesses and industries, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.
