History of Wistaston
The village of Wistaston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was known as West LISTONE. It is thought that the name derives from the Old English for ‘west pattern or stone’, referring to the outline of an ancient hill fort which can still be seen in the north west of the village. The hill fort would have been built by the Celts during the Iron Age and would have been used as a defensive settlement.
The AngloSaxons settled in the area in the 5th and 6th centuries and the village is thought to have been founded by them. Wistaston is mentioned in a charter of King Edgar dated 959 as being one of the places at which a meeting of the Witenagemot, the king’s council, was held.
At the time of the Norman Conquest, Wistaston was held by Earl Hugh of Chester and it was recorded in the Domesday Book that there were 24 households in the village.
Over the centuries, Wistaston has been an agricultural community, with the main crops being wheat, barley and oats. In the 18th century, thevillage was known for its production of salt, which was extracted from brine springs in the area.
The industrial revolution brought changes to Wistaston, with the opening of coal mines in the 19th century. The most important mine was Wistaston Colliery, which was sunk in 1878 and employed over 500 men at its peak. The colliery closed in 1966.
Today, Wistaston is a thriving village with a population of around 5,000. It has a number of shops and businesses, a primary school and a recreation ground. There are also a number of historic buildings, including St Mary’s Church, which dates from the 12th century, and the Grade II listed Manor House, which was built in 1624.
