Wirksworth is a town and civil parish in Derbyshire, England, on the River Derwent. It occupies an area of 1,485 acres (6.01 km2) and had a population of 4,541 at the 2011 Census. Thanks to its history as a market town, Wirksworth has many fine buildings. It is home to the Derbyshire Dales Visitor Centre.
The town has a long history. The name “Wirksworth” is AngloSaxon in origin, meaning “working farmstead”. The town appears in the Domesday Book as “Wirchesvorde”. It was the capital of the AngloSaxon district of Wirkesworde.
In 1086, Wirksworth was owned by William Peverel, an illegitimate son of William the Conqueror. The town became a Royal Borough in 1228.
Wirksworth was an important market town in medieval England. It had a weekly market and two annual fairs. The town was also a centre for the woollen industry.
In the 17th century, Wirksworth was a hotbed of Puritanism. The town was strongly Puritan during the Civil War. Oliver Cromwell stayed in Wirksworth in 1650.
