History of Winter Park

When you think of Winter Park, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, you probably think of the worldrenowned ski resort. But there’s much more to this idyllic mountain town than meets the eye.

Winter Park is a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities like skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, and camping in the stunning Rocky Mountains. The town also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene, with an abundance of galleries, museums, and theatres.

But Winter Park didn’t always look like the pictureperfect town it is today. In fact, its modern incarnation is relatively new.

The area now known as Winter Park was originally settled by Ute and Arapaho Native Americans. The Utes called the valley “Grasshopper Gulch” due to the abundance of grasshoppers that inhabited the area.

In the 1860s, the U.S. government forcibly removed the Native Americans from their land and opened the area up to white settlement. The first homesteaders arrived in the 1870s, but it wasn’t until 1904 that the town of Winter Park was officially founded.

The town’s name was chosen by developers because of its location – nestled in the valley between two mountain ranges, the Vasquez and the Medicine Bow.

In the early years, Winter Park was primarily a summer destination for Denver residents looking to escape the heat. But all that changed in the 1930s when the area’s first ski resort, Sleeping Giant, opened for business.

Sleeping Giant was quickly followed by other ski resorts, and soon Winter Park was known as “Colorado’s Ski Capital.” The town’s economy boomed, and its population grew.

In the decades since, Winter Park has continued to evolve. Today, it’s a yearround destination for visitors from all over the world. And while skiing remains a big part of its identity, the town has much more to offer, from its charming Main Street to its lively arts and culture scene.

So whether you’re looking to hit the slopes or take in a stunning mountain view, Winter Park is sure to impress.
