History of Winnetka
The Native Americans who first lived in the area now known as Winnetka were members of the Potawatomi tribe. They left the area long before the first Europeans arrived. The first Europeans to settle in the area were farmers from England and Germany who arrived in the early 1800s. These pioneers cleared the land for farming and built log cabins.
As more settlers arrived, the community began to grow. A school and a church were built. In 1869, the first Post Office was established. The community was officially named “Winnetka” in 1869. The name is believed to come from a Native American chief named Winnemocca.
In the late 1800s, wealthy Chicagoans began to build summer homes in Winnetka. The village became a popular destination for wealthy Chicago families. Many of the grand homes from this era are still standing today.
In the early 1900s, Winnetka became a affluent suburban community. The village was known for its large estates and beautiful homes. In the mid1900s, the village began to experience a decline in population. This decline continued into the early 21st century. However, Winnetka has recently begun to experience a resurgence in population.
