Windsor is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 11,789 at the 2010 census. It is the site of the world headquarters of the Repeal Day Club and the birthplace of Mark Twain.
Situated on the Connecticut River directly across from Hartford, Windsor is the southernmost town in the state. Throughout the 17th century, the area was the home of numerous tribes of indigenous people, mostly Algonquian peoples.
In 1633, Dutch explorer Adrian Block landed on the site of what is now Windsor and named it “Vredehoek” (“peace corner”). Shortly after, Puritans settled the area, led by Reverend Warham and William Pitkin. They had established Windsor in 1635, under the legal system of the Connecticut Colony.Windsor was the first English settlement in the state.
After a decade of prosperity, the town was hit by a major flood in 1647 and over the next hundred years, several smaller floods occurred. In 1771, the broadest flood in Windsor’s history inundated the town, causing considerable damage.Windsor was incorporated as a town in May 1858.

History of Windsor
The city of Windsor is located in Sonoma County, California, in the United States. The population was 26,801 at the 2010 census. Windsor is located on the Rancho Sonoma Mexican land grant. The town was founded by European Americans in 1851, and is named after the British town of Windsor.
The first European settler of Windsor was Hiram Lewis, a farmer from New York. He settled here in 1835 and built a cabin. In 1851, a group of settlers from New England arrived and led by Levi Webster, they laid out the town and named it after Windsor, Connecticut. The stagecoach line reached Windsor in 1851, and the town became a stop on the route between Santa Rosa and Healdsburg. The United States Postal Service established a post office in Windsor in 1852.
In 1855, the first school was built in Windsor. In 1856, the Windsor Town Company was formed to promotegrowth. In 1858, the first church was built. In the 1860s, the area’s first newspaper, The Democrat, was published. In 1865, the first bank opened for business.
During the 1870s, Windsor’s growth continued. A number of businesses were established, including a flour mill, a winery, and a creamery. In 1879, the first railroad depot was built.
The city of Windsor was incorporated in 1892. The city’s first mayor was J. P. Lynch.
In the early 1900s, Windsor’s growth stalled. The city’s economy was dependent on agriculture, and the development of new agricultural methods led to a decline in the number of farms in the area. The city’s population began to decline in the 1940s, as people moved to larger cities in search of jobs.
