History of Wilsden

The village of Wilsden is situated within the county of West Yorkshire in England and has a long and rich history dating back to the 11th century. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book where it is recorded as being part of the Manor of Bradford. The name Wilsden is thought to derive from the Old English words ‘wilig’ meaning willow and ‘denu’ meaning valley, and indeed willow trees are still found growing in the nearby valley today.

The Manor of Bradford was owned by the de Lacy family during the medieval period and in 1316 they granted a charter to the villagers which allowed them to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. The market proved to be very successful and over time the village grew and prospered. In the 18th century Wilsden was a bustling market town with a population of around 2,000 people.

The coming of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century led to a decline in the village’s fortunes as many of the industries which had sustained it, such as the wool trade, went into decline. The population of the village dwindled and by the end of the century it had shrunk to just a few hundred people.

Today, Wilsden is a sleepy village with a population of less than 1,000 people. Its history, however, is still evident in its architecture, with many of the buildings in the village dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
