Founded in 1638 by Swedish settlers, Wilmington is both the largest city in the state of Delaware and the county seat of New Castle County. In 2019, the population of Wilmington was estimated at 72,829. Located at the confluence of the Christina River and the Brandywine River, Wilmington is 90 miles (140 km) southwest of Philadelphia and 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Baltimore.
The city was named after Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington. The city’s history is closely tied to the colonial era, when it served as a major port city for ships bound for Philadelphia and other points along the East Coast.
Today, Wilmington is a major financial center for the credit card industry, with many of the nation’s largest credit card companies having operations in the city. The city is also home to the Port of Wilmington, which is the busiest port on the East Coast and the sixth busiest port in the country.

History of Wilmington (Delaware)
Wilimington is the largest city in the state of Delaware, United States. The city was named by Proprietor Thomas Penn after his friend Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington. Residents of Wilmington are known as “Wilmingtonians”.
The first European settlement in the area was made by Swedish settlers in 1638, who built a fort on the site of presentday Wilmington. This fort was captured by the Dutch in 1655, and they renamed it Fort Casimir. The British captured the fort during the Seven Years’ War in 1762 and renamed it Fort George.
The area between the Christina and Brandywine rivers was settled by Swedish, Finnish, and Dutch immigrants in the 1630s. William Penn arrived in 1682 to take possession of the area for the English Crown. He renamed the area “New Castle”, after the English town of Newcastle.
Pennsylvanians were reluctant to settle in the area due to its poor soil and hostile Indians, but Penn’s peace treaties with the Lenape Indians calmed the fears of wouldbe settlers. In 1701, the New Castle County Court ordered the construction of a courthouse, which was completed two years later.

The town grew quickly, and by 1750 there were 100 houses and 14 merchants operating in Wilmington. In 1762, the town was turned over to the British during the Seven Years’ War. The British renamed the town “Newport” and fortified it against possible attack from the Americans.
The British occupation came to an end in 1778 when the French, who were allied with the Americans, bombarded the town with cannon fire, forcing the British to evacuate. The Americans retook the town and renamed it “Wilmington” after the last British governor, Lord Wilmington.
The city grew rapidly during the 1800s, due in part to the increasing number of immigrants arriving from Europe. The construction of the Delaware & Chesapeake Canal in 1829 provided Wilmington with a direct link to the port of Baltimore, and the city became an important shipping center. Wilmington was also the home of the largest shipyard in the country, the Harlan & Hollingsworth Company.
During the Civil War, Wilmington was an important target for both the Union and Confederate armies. The Union army occupied Wilmington in 1861 and blockade runners were often able to get through the Union blockade to bring supplies to the Confederate army. In 1862, the Union army launched an unsuccessful attack on the Confederate army’s position at the Battle of Fredericksburg.
In 1865, the Union army finally succeeded in capturing Wilmington, which was the last major Confederate port on the Atlantic coast. The city remained under Union control for the rest of the war.
After the war, Wilmington experienced a period of economic growth. The city’s population nearly doubled between 1860 and 1880, and new industries, such as the DuPont powder mills, were established. The city continued to grow in the early 20th century, and by the 1920s it was one of the busiest ports on the East Coast.
Today, Wilmington is a thriving city with a vibrant downtown and a diverse population. The city is home to a number of large corporations, including Bank of America, AstraZeneca, and DHL. Wilmington is also a popular tourist destination, thanks to its convenient location and its historic charm.
