History of Williston

Williston, North Dakota is a city in the state of North Dakota. The city is the county seat of Williams County. The city’s population was estimated at 26,738 in 2019, which makes it the eighthlargest city in the state. The city is named after Daniel Williston, a pioneer cattleman from Vermont who settled in the area in 1864. The city is located in the Bakken oil fields, which were discovered in the 1950s. The Bakken oil field is the largest oil field in the United States. Williston is the largest city in the Bakken oil field.

The history of Williston began in 1864 when Daniel Williston, a Vermont cattleman, established a cattle ranch on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1870, a group of investors from St. Paul, Minnesota, arrived in the area and bought Williston’s ranch. They platted the town of Williston and established a ferry across the Missouri River. In 1873, the Northern Pacific Railway arrived in the town, making it an important shipping point for the region. The town rapidly grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
