Williamson is sometimes referred to as “The World’s Friendliest City”. Williamson is part of the HuntingtonAshland, WVKYOH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702. New definition of the MSA produced a 2010 population of 361,564. Williamson was established as a town on March 23, 1891 by an act of the West Virginia Legislature. The city was named after Wallsend Coleman Williamson (18191888), a civil engineer and regional surveyor who laid out the city. The Mingo County Courthouse, Mingo County Museum, Williamson Memorial Hospital, Mingo Central High School, Matewan Center, Williamson Fieldhouse, Williamson Memorial Library, Tug Fork River, Matewan Recreation Complex, Mingo County Public Library, and Williamson Memorial Park are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
