WilkesBarre is a city located in the Northeastern Pennsylvania in the United States. The city is the county seat of Luzerne County and is one of the principal cities in the Scranton–WilkesBarre–Hazleton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located at the center of the Wyoming Valley, WilkesBarre was first settled in 1769 and formally incorporated in 1806. The city grew rapidly in the 19th century after the discovery of anthracite coal in the region. With the opening of several anthracite mines in the area, the city soon became a major mining and manufacturing center and was dubbed the “Diamond City.”
The city’s population reached its peak in 1940 at 86,637 people. However, as the coal industry began to decline in the mid20th century, WilkesBarre experienced a decrease in population and economic activity. Today, the city has a population of 41,498 people and remains an important regional center for commerce and culture.
